China Student Visa (X1/X2): Everything You Need to Know

Two Visa Types: X1 and X2

China issues two types of student visas, and choosing the right one depends entirely on the length of your program:

Most degree-seeking students will need an X1 visa. The X2 visa is primarily for short-term exchange or language students.

Step-by-Step Application Process

Step 1: Get Your Admission Notice & JW Form

Once accepted by a Chinese university, they will send you:

An Admission Notice (录取通知书)
A JW201 or JW202 Form (visa application form for studying in China)

These two documents are absolutely essential — you cannot start the visa process without them.

Step 2: Complete the Physical Examination

Visit an authorized medical facility in your home country and complete the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. This includes:

Blood tests (HIV, syphilis, hepatitis)
Chest X-ray
ECG
General physical exam
The form must be signed and stamped by the medical facility

Important: Many countries require you to go to specific government-designated hospitals for this exam. Check with the Chinese embassy in your country.

Step 3: Fill Out the Online Application (COVA)

Go to cova.cs.mfa.gov.cn
Create an account and select "Student Visa (X1 or X2)"
Fill in all personal information, travel details, and program information
Upload a digital photo
Print the completed form and sign it by hand

Step 4: Submit to the Chinese Embassy/Consulate

Gather all your documents and submit them to:

Step 5: Pay the Visa Fee & Wait

Step 6: Collect Your Visa

Pick up your passport with the visa stamped in it. Double-check:

Your name and passport number are correct
The visa type (X1 or X2) matches your program
The validity dates make sense for your travel plans

After You Arrive: The Residence Permit (X1 Only)

If you have an X1 visa, you must apply for a Temporary Residence Permit within 30 days of arriving in China. Here is how:

Register at the local police station within 24 hours of arrival (your university will usually help with this)
Take a physical examination at a Chinese hospital (even if you already did one in your home country)
Gather documents: Passport, admission notice, JW form, physical exam results, university enrollment certificate, passport photos
Visit the local Exit-Entry Administration Bureau (出入境管理局)
Pay the fee (~¥400–800) and wait 15 working days
Collect your Residence Permit — this will be a sticker in your passport

What the Residence Permit Gives You

Legal right to stay in China for the duration of your studies (up to 5 years)
Multiple entries — travel freely in and out of China
Ability to open a Chinese bank account (essential for daily life)
Ability to sign apartment leases

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Not applying early enough — Apply at least 1 month before your departure, but not more than 3 months ahead
Expired passport — Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the application date
Incomplete physical exam — Missing a single test item can result in rejection
Wrong JW form — Make sure you have JW201 (scholarship) or JW202 (self-funded) as appropriate
Overstaying your X2 visa — If your program extends beyond 180 days, you need to convert to an X1 visa before your X2 expires
Missing the 30-day window — X1 holders who fail to apply for a residence permit within 30 days face fines and complications
