About University of Science and Technology of China

USTC is China's elite science academy, founded by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) to train the nation's top scientific talent. It's deliberately small (only 20,000 students vs. 50,000+ at other C9 schools) to maintain an extraordinary student-faculty ratio. USTC pioneered China's quantum computing and quantum communication breakthroughs — its quantum satellite (Micius) made global headlines. Located in Hefei, a rapidly growing tech hub, USTC offers the cheapest living costs of any C9 university while maintaining world-class research infrastructure. The university has the highest percentage of graduates who go on to earn PhDs in the US.

Admission Tips

USTC is the hidden gem of C9 for science students. Admission is less competitive than Tsinghua/PKU but the research quality is comparable. CSC quota is generous — both Type A and Type B available. PhD students often get additional CAS funding. Professors are very responsive to email outreach. GPA: 3.0+/4.0 for Master's, research experience highly valued for PhD.

Campus Life

Hefei is China's fastest-growing tech city — affordable, safe, and increasingly modern. The campus is compact and walkable with a tight-knit research community. Living costs are the lowest of any C9 city: ¥1,500–2,500/month total. The city has expanded rapidly with a new metro system, malls, and tech parks. It's not as cosmopolitan as Beijing/Shanghai but offers focused, distraction-free academic life.
